The wide-spread use of carbines in the Iraq and Afghanistan wars made it look as if PDW’s were not necessary, but finally in 2007 the PDW debate was refreshed by an US Army announcement that it plans again to introduce a PDW.

Books

Maxim Popenker and Anthony G. Williams joined to write this book about Assault rifles - it gives a fine overview about the development of assault rifles, has some info on compact carbines and is an unusually good source on the Russian assault rifle history.
